その2:表現方法
英語の基本文法をマスターする。
英文タイピングの基本をマスターする。
要点のみをつく。
(ア) 電報を書く感覚で英文を書く。
味気なさ、物足りなさ、及び冷たさすら感じる場合があるが我慢して書く。
→ 〜です。〜です。However、〜です。In addition、〜です。〜です。ただし、英文レベルで電報にならないようにする。
The afternoon paper was scattered over the yard. The paper had been thrown carelessly by the news carrier. The paper had become unfolded. The paper had been caught be the wind.
↓
Thrown carelessly by the news carrier, the afternoon paper had become unfolded, been caught by the wind, and been scattered about the yard.
↓
"Combine the ideas in each group following into one smooth sentence."
(イ) 不必要に語数を増やさない / 副詞・形容詞・前置詞句を多用する。
Commuters going back and forth to work or school formed car pools. → Commuters formed car pools.
There were three squirrels in the yard. → Three squirrels were in the yard.
At this point and time → Now
Since he believed the ship could be saved, he called for volunteers to help him. → Believing the ship could be saved, he called for volunteers to help him.
When the sun sets, the streets lights come on. → At sunset the street lights come on.
Dr. Brown, who is the chief surgeon, will operate. → Dr. Brown, the chief surgeon, will operate.
Laura is a runner who never tires. → Laura is a tireless runner.
She greeted everyone in a cordial manner. → She greeted everyone cordially.
(ウ) 意味を成さない表現及び不必要な表現は全て避ける。
「何もありませんがどうぞ召し上がって下さい。」 → "We have nothing but please enjoy your meal."
「この場をお借りしてご挨拶させて頂きたいと思います。」 → "I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself."
適した言葉を使う。→ Exactness
(ア) 北アメリカ英語畑の存在を認識する。
外来語、カタカナ英語、及び使い方がはっきりしない名詞や動詞は全て疑ってかかる。
"They all agreed that segregations in toilets and eating places should be eliminated."
"I would like to buy a video."
"Health meter for sale."
